Short Answer

Analyzing Input Synergy in Production

A farm manager observes the following results from three experiments on a cornfield, starting from the same initial conditions each time:

  • Experiment A: Increasing only the amount of fertilizer by 10 units results in an additional 50 bushels of corn.
  • Experiment B: Increasing only the amount of water by 10 units results in an additional 40 bushels of corn.
  • Experiment C: Increasing both the fertilizer and water by 10 units each results in an additional 120 bushels of corn.

Explain the economic principle that accounts for why the output increase in Experiment C (120 bushels) is greater than the sum of the output increases from Experiments A and B (50 + 40 = 90 bushels).
