Analyzing the Decision to Punish

Consider a scenario in a group economic experiment. You are in a group of four. After observing that three members, including yourself, contributed a significant amount to a group fund, you see that one member contributed nothing. You are now given an anonymous option: you can pay $1 of your own money to have $3 deducted from the non-contributing member's earnings. Analyze the decision to punish from two perspectives: a) a player motivated solely by maximizing their own immediate financial payoff, and b) a player who is willing to incur a cost to enforce a group norm of cooperation. Explain what each type of player would do and why.
