Analyzing the Impact of Technological Change

A self-sufficient farmer makes a daily choice between hours of free time and bushels of grain produced. This trade-off is represented by a 'feasible frontier'. The farmer's preferences are shown by 'indifference curves'. The farmer is initially at their optimal point, where the feasible frontier is tangent to the highest possible indifference curve.

Imagine the farmer discovers a new planting technique that allows them to produce more grain for the same number of hours worked. This causes the feasible frontier to expand outwards. Analyze how this technological improvement will affect the farmer's new optimal choice. Will they necessarily consume more grain? Will they necessarily choose to have more free time? Justify your answer by explaining the conflicting incentives the farmer now faces.
