The final step of the HIV replication cycle is maturation. During this stage, the viral protease enzyme cleaves the viral polyproteins in the immature virion, allowing it to form the infectious, mature HIV virus, which is then released from the host cell.

During the assembly and budding stage of the HIV replication cycle, new viral RNA and viral proteins move to the host cell surface. The immature virus is assembled in an outbulging of the host cell membrane, enclosing the viral genome in a capsid as it buds and pushes out of the cell.

Once the cell receives a signal to activate, it will begin to produce HIV RNA. When this cell is activated, it will use the host enzyme RNA polymerase to make mRNA. The mRNA will host instructions to make new viral proteins.
