In this section of the Elahi Nameh, Attar presents an allegory illustrating the Sufi taxonomy of spiritual seekers based on their pre-existential choices. Before the creation of physical bodies, souls were arrayed and presented with the material world (Dunya), Paradise (Jannah), and the Divine Reality. The narrative describes how the vast majority of souls were captivated by the material world, while most of the remainder sought the rewards of Paradise, leaving only a select few who desired God alone. This parable serves to explain the Sufi ideal of pure, disinterested love, wherein the true seeker renounces both worldly attachments and heavenly compensations in pursuit of the Beloved Himself.
