(3) Anecdote on the State of the Souls before the Creation of Bodies

Original content

English translation

It is said that during the period when the souls Were created before physical bodies, The count of its duration was three or four years, Each of which is a thousand of that world. It is thus narrated that those lofty souls, In that period when they were empty of body, Were joined together in assembly, Bound together in a single row. Then all at once, from behind the souls, The world became visible to their eyes. When all those souls saw the world, They ran toward the world with heart and soul. And of the part that remained behind at that place, Paradise appeared to their right there. When, O wonder, they saw this portion of Paradise, They fled from Hell with all their might. A few souls remained in their place, Having no desire toward any direction. They chose neither the world nor Paradise, Nor did they flee a hair's breadth from Hell. An address came: 'O mad souls, What is it that you want here now? You are free from both the world and Paradise, And you have no suffering from Hell. What is it that you need on our path, That our court has become necessary to you?' A cry arose from all those souls, As though their lives had come to an end, Saying: 'O Owner of the Throne, the Earth, and the Pedestal, Since You are all-knowing, why do You ask us? We want You, and all else is nothing; You are the Truth of Certainty, and all else is nothing.' The address came: 'If you are seekers of Us, You are all seekers of all kinds of tribulation. As many as the hairs of animals, Or the sands of the desert from end to end, Or the drops of rain, Or the leaves of the branches, Even more than all of that, every pain and affliction Shall I pour down upon you in grief. I shall make thousands of fiery thorns And place them upon your wounded chests at every moment.' When those souls heard the address of the Truth, They let out a cry of joy from that gladness, Saying: 'May our souls be sacrificed for that affliction! Whatever You wish for us, let it be upon us. We welcome Your affliction with our souls, And begin our eternal life.' Since there is a secret between Him and every soul, The suspicion of every soul is such That there is no keeper of the secret of this court but itself, And none is aware of the secret of gnosis but itself. Although the souls know it is good, Yet He loves one soul out of them; The others are the veil of that soul, And for the sake of that soul they are all wounded. They drew a path as narrow as a hair to the door, Even if they cut eighteen thousand paths. Although all souls were of one attribute, Yet that soul was the goal of the people of gnosis.
