(7) The Tale of the Beloved of Tus with the Dog and the Rider

Original content

English translation

Once, the Beloved of Tus, in a moment of fervor, Was walking along a path in a state of ecstasy. A dog appeared before him on that way; In his selflessness, he suddenly struck it with a stone. He saw a green-clad rider from afar, Who approached from behind, his face all light. He struck him hard with a whip, And said to him: 'Hey, you who are unaware! Do you not know at whom you throw a stone? For in essence, you are not of the same color as it. Are you not both from the same mold? Why do you hold it in lower regard than yourself? Since the dog is not separate from the mold of Power, It is not right for you to act superior to the dog. Dogs are hidden behind a veil, O friend; If you have a pure mind, look beyond this skin. For although the dog is unpleasing in appearance, Its soul is elevated in its attributes. Many secrets are shared with the dog, But its outward form is a barrier to them.'
