(۱) حکایت سرپاتک هندی / (1) The Tale of Sarpatak the Indian

متن و ترجمه / Text and Translation

به هندستان یکی را کودکی بود	که عقلش بیش و عمرش اندکی بود
In India there was a man who had a child Whose intellect was great and whose age was small.
ز هر علمی بسی تحصیل بودش	ازان بر هر کسی تفضیل بودش
He had studied much of every science; Because of that, he had superiority over everyone.
اگرچه بود در هر علم سرکش	ز جمله علم تنجیم آمدش خوش
Although he was masterful in every science, Out of all of them, he favored the science of astrology.
در آنجا وصف شاه چینیان بود	ز حسن دخترش آنجا نشان بود
In that science, there was a description of the King of China, And there was a sign of the beauty of his daughter.
به یک ره فتنهٔ آن دلستان شد	که آسان بر پری عاشق توان شد
All at once he fell under the spell of that heart-stealer, For one can easily fall in love with a fairy.
حکیمی بود در شهری دگر دور	که در تنجیم و در طب بود مشهور
There was a wise sage in another distant city, Who was famous in astrology and in medicine.
ندادی در سرا کس را رهی باز	نبودی هرگزش در خانه دمساز
He would not let anyone enter his house, And he never had a companion in his house.
ازان تنها نشستی تا دگر کس	نداند علم او ، او داند و بس
For this reason, he sat alone so that no other person Would know his science; he knew it, and that was all.
پدر را گفت آن کودک که یک روز	مرا بر پیش آن پیر دلفروز
The child said to his father: 'One day, Take me before that heart-illuminating elder,
که می گویند می آید بر او	شه پریان و آنگه دختر او
To whom, they say, The King of the Fairies and then his daughter come.
دلم را آرزوی دیدن اوست	بود کانجا به بینم چهرهٔ دوست
My heart desires to see her; Perhaps there I may behold the face of the friend,
که تا گردم ز هر علمی خبردار	نمیرم همچو دنیادار مردار
So that I may become aware of every science And not die like a carrion-like world-seeker.'
پدر گفت او نه زن دارد نه فرزند	بدو هستند خلق آرزومند
The father said: 'He has neither wife nor child; People long for him,
که او ره باز می ندهد کسی را	چو تو بود آرزوی وی بسی را
For he does not allow entry to anyone; Many have had the same desire as you.
که می ترسد که گر یابد کسی راه	ز علم و حکمت وی گردد آگاه
He fears that if someone finds a way in, They will become aware of his science and wisdom.'
پسر گفتا که آنجا بر نهانم	که من خود حیلت این کار دانم
The son said: 'Place me there in secret, For I myself know the trick for this task.'
پسر شد با پدر القصه در راه	پسر کردش ز مکر خویش آگاه
In short, the son went on the way with his father; The son made him aware of his trick:
که پیش آن حکیم هندوان شو	ز دل کینه برون کن مهربان شو
'Go before that Indian sage; Cast out malice from your heart and be kind.
بدو گو کودکی دارم کر و لال	ندارم نعمتی هستم مقل حال
Say to him: I have a child who is deaf and mute; I have no wealth and am in poor circumstances.
برای آخرت بپذیرش از من	چنین بار گران بر گیر از من
For the sake of the Hereafter, accept him from me; Take this heavy burden from me,
که تا در خدمت تو روزگاری	کند چونانکه فرماییش کاری
So that he may serve you for a time And do whatever work you command him.
گهت آتش کند گه آورد آب	بیندازد به حرمت جامهٔ خواب
Sometimes he will stoke the fire for you, sometimes fetch water, And respectfully lay out your bedding.
اگر بیرون روی در بسته دارد	سر صد خدمتت پیوسته دارد
If you go out, he will keep the door closed; He will constantly be devoted to serving you in a hundred ways.
به غایت زیرک ست اما کر و لال	مگردان ناامیدم از همه حال
He is extremely intelligent but deaf and mute; Do not make me disappointed in any case.'
چنین کس گر کسی برهان نماید	وجودش با عدم یکسان نماید
If someone presents such a person, His existence seems identical to non-existence.
پدر پیش حکیم آمد بسی گفت	که تا آخر حکیمش در پذیرفت
The father came before the sage and spoke much, Until at last the sage accepted him.
حکیمش امتحانی کرد در حال	که بشناسد که تا هست او کر و لال
The sage tested him immediately To know whether he was indeed deaf and mute.
مگر داروی بیهوشی بدو داد	چو کودک خورد حالی تن فرو داد
He gave him an anesthetic drug; When the child drank it, he immediately succumbed.
طبیبی را ز در بیرون شد استاد	بجست از جای آن کودک بایستاد
The master physician went out the door; The child jumped up and stood.
بدانست او که هست آن امتحانش	که مست خواب خواهد کرد جانش
He knew that this was his test, That would make his soul drunk with sleep.
به گرد خانه همچون باد می گشت	به کار خویشتن استاد می گشت
He ran around the house like the wind, Becoming masterful in his own business.
ازان می گشت وزان بود آن شتابش	کزان دارو نگیرد بو که خوابش
He was moving around and in such a hurry So that the smell of the drug would not make him fall asleep.
چو آمد اوستاد و کرد در باز	هم آنجا خواب کرد آن کودک آغاز
When the master came and opened the door, The child immediately began to sleep.
میان خواب بانگ خفته می کرد	نه خود را مست و نه آشفته می کرد
In the midst of sleep, he made the sounds of a sleeper, Making himself neither drunk nor agitated.
چو استاد آمد و بنشست بر جای	فرو بردش درفشی سخت در پای
When the master came and sat down, He thrust a sharp awl deep into his foot.
بجست از جای کودک پس بیفتاد	به زاری همچو گنگان کرد فریاد
The child jumped from his place and then fell; He cried out in distress like mute people.
چو بیرون آمدی بانگ از دهانش	نشان دادی ز گنگی زبانش
When the cry came out of his mouth, It gave indication of a mute tongue.
میان بانگ ازو پرسید استاد	که ای کودک نگویی تا چه افتاد
In the midst of the cry, the master asked him: 'O child, will you not say what happened?'
نداد البته آن کودک جوابش	برفت از زیرکی کاری صوابش
The child did not answer him at all; Out of cleverness, he did what was right.
چو کرد آن امتحان استاد محتال	یقینش شد که هم کرست و هم لال
When the cunning master performed that test, He became certain that he was both deaf and mute.
چه گویم روز و شب ده سال پیوست	دران خانه بدین تدبیر بنشست
What shall I say? For ten consecutive years, day and night, He remained in that house with this stratagem.
اگر بیرون شدی از خانه استاد	کتابش می گرفتی سر به سر یاد
If the master went out of the house, He would memorize his book entirely.
وگر استاد اندر خانه بودی	بسی گفتی ز هر علم او شنیدی
And if the master was in the house, He spoke much of every science and the boy heard.
گرفتی یاد کودک آن سخن ها	نوشتی چون شدی در خانه تنها
The child memorized those words, And wrote them down when he was alone in the house.
به هر علمی چنان استاد شد او	که از استاد خود آزاد شد او
In every science he became such a master That he became independent of his master.
یکی صندوق بودی قفل کرده	که استادش نهفتی زیر پرده
There was a locked chest Which his master hid behind a curtain.
نه مهرش برگرفتی نه گشادی	نه چشم کس بر آنجا اوفتادی
He neither removed its seal nor opened it, Nor did anyone's eye ever fall upon it.
به دل می گفت آن کودک که پیداست	که آن چیزی که می جویم من آنجاست
The child said to his heart: 'It is clear That what I am seeking is in there.'
ولی زهره نبود آن در گشادن	که داد صبر می بایست دادن
But he did not have the courage to open it, For he had to give patience its due.
مگر شد شاهزاد شهر رنجور	کسی آمد بر استاد مشهور
It happened that the prince of the city fell ill; Someone came to the famous master:
که چیزی در سر این شاهزاده ست	کزان شه زاده از پای اوفتاده ست
'There is something in the head of this prince, Because of which the prince has fallen down.
چو حیوانی بجنبد گاه گاهی	به علم آن کسی را نیست راهی
It moves like a living creature from time to time; No one has any way to it through science.
اگر دریابدش استاد پیروز	وگرنه زار خواهد مرد امروز
If the victorious master can cure him, well; Otherwise, he will die miserably today.'
ازان علت نبود آن کودک آگاه	چو استادش روانه گشت در راه
The child was not aware of that affliction; When his master set out on the way.
روان شد کودک و چادر برافکند	که تا خود را بدان منظر درافکند
The child set off, threw off his veil, So that he might throw himself into that scene.
چو رفت القصه پیش شاه استاد	به بالایی بلند آن کودک استاد
In short, when the master went before the king, The child stood on a high elevation.
دران پرده که شه بیرون سر داشت	ورم بود و درو یک جانور داشت
Behind that membrane where the king's head was exposed, There was a swelling, and in it was a living creature.
همه مویش بچید و پرده بشکافت	چو خرچنگی درو جنبنده ای یافت
He shaved all his hair and split the membrane; He found a moving creature like a crab inside.
فرو برده به دیگر پرده چنگال	یکی آلت حکیم آورد در حال
It had dug its claws into another membrane; The physician immediately brought an instrument
که تا او را براندازد ز پرده	مگر گردد به آهن دور کرده
To remove it from the membrane, Hoping it would be removed by the iron tool.
چو آهن بیشتر بردی فرا پیش	فرو می برد او چنگل بسر بیش
The closer he brought the iron tool, The deeper the creature drove its claws into the head.
ز زخم چنگل او شاه زاده	فغان می کرد از درد چکاده
From the wound of its claws, the prince Screamed in pain from the top of his head.
ز بالا آن همه شاگرد می دید	به آخر صبر او زان کار برسید
From above, the disciple saw all of this; At last, his patience with the situation ran out.
زبان بگشاد کای استاد عالم	به آهن می کنی این بند محکم
He spoke out: 'O master of the world! You are making this bond firm with iron,
ولیکن گر رسد بر پشت داغش	همه چنگل برآرد از دماغش
But if a hot brand touches its back, It will withdraw all its claws from his brain.'
چو آگه شد ز سر کار استاد	ز غصه جان بدان عالم فرستاد
When the master became aware of the secret of the matter, He sent his soul to the other world out of grief.
