(3) The Tale of Solomon [son of] David, Peace Be Upon Them, with the Loving Ant
Original content
English translation
Solomon, with all his grandeur and majesty, Passed by a troop of ants from one side.
All the ants went forward to pay him homage, In a single hour, more than thousands advanced.
Except one ant who did not come before him quickly, For there was a mound of dirt in front of its house.
Like the wind, that ant was carrying away Each single particle of dirt, so that the mound might be cleared.
Solomon summoned it and said: 'O ant, As I see you without strength or power,
If you attain the lifespan of Noah and the patience of Job, Your task will not succeed.
This task is not suited for an arm like yours, This mound will not disappear because of you.'
The ant opened its tongue and said: 'O King, With high resolve, one can walk this path.
Do not look at my nature and my weakness, Look at the perfection of my high resolve.
There is an ant who is hidden from me, Who has drawn me into the snare of its love.
It has said to me: "If you discard this mound of dirt From here and make the path clean,
I shall throw away this boulder of separation from the path, And sit with you then."
Now I have girded my loins for this work, I know nothing but carrying away this dirt.
If this dirt disappears, I can become the buyer of its union.
And if my life is surrendered in this matter, At least I will not be a false pretender and a liar.'
O dear one, learn love from an ant, Learn such vision from the blind.
Although the ant's cloak is very black, Yet it is one of the active wayfarers of the path.
Do not look upon an ant with a belittling eye, For it too has a passion in its heart.
On this path, I do not know what state this is, Where a lion receives a warning from an ant.
