(4) The Tale of the Old Man Who Had a Beautiful Son

Original content

English translation

An elder had a son like the moon, Who had a beautiful face, good character, and talent. The father, who had thought of him so highly, Had relied on him greatly. In the end he died, and that father's soul burned, What am I saying? Not just one, a hundred livers burned. Beside himself, the father followed the coffin, Becoming both bewildered and astounded. When he scattered much dust and wailed, With a heart full of pain, he turned his face to heaven. He spoke thus: 'O You who have no relation, You are excused, for You have no child. You are free from my pain, Since You are transcendent behind the veil. Even if You did not see endless repentance, You must have heard the story of the House of Sorrows. The son has the well and the prison there, The father has the House of Sorrows here. If he did not have a bond like Yours, There would be no doubt that he would not be like this. A son was joined with his father for forty years, Why should his effort not be granted even for a moment? If there is a line written, it is nothing but a mistake, And if there is a word spoken, that too is not permissible.'
