مگر پرسید درویشی ز مجنون
که چندست ای پسر سن تو اکنون

جوابش داد آن شوریده احوال
که سن من هزارست و چهل سال

بدو گفتا چه می گوئی تو غافل
مگر دیوانه تر گشتی تو جاهل

پس او گفتا بسی سر وقت بودست
که لیلی یک نفس رویم نمودست

چل عمر منست و این زیانست
ولی عمر هزاران آن زمانست

چو این چل سال من با خویش بودم
ز نقد عمر خود درویش بودم

ولی آن یک زمان سالی هزارست
که با لیلی مرا خود بی شمارست

هزاران سال یک دم باشد آنجا
چه می گویم کزین کم باشد آنجا

چو دریابد وجود بی نهایت
دو عالم را عدم ماند ولایت

ببین ای دوست تا این چه وجودست
که یک یک ذره آن را در سجودست

وجودست آنکه نه بیش ونه کم شد
درو خواهد همه چیزی عدم شد

زهی عالی وجودی کین وجودات
درو معدوم خواهد شد بلذات

چو مرد آنجایگه نابود گردد
زیانش جمله آنجا سود گردد

اگر دست آورد خلق جهانی
یکی بر دامنش نرسد زمانی

چو نه این کس بود نه دامن او
که گردد یک زمان پیرامن او

English translation

A dervish once asked Majnun, 'How old are you now, O youth?' That distracted one replied to him, 'My age is a thousand and forty years.' He said to him, 'What are you saying, O heedless one? Have you perhaps become even madder, O ignorant one?' Then he said, 'There have been many moments of presence When Layla showed her face to me for a single breath. Forty years is my life, and that is a loss, But the life of thousands of years is that time. For in these forty years I was with myself; I was a dervish of the cash of my life. But that one moment is a thousand years, Wherein my time with Layla is indeed beyond count. Thousands of years are but a single breath there; What am I saying, it is even less than this there. When one realizes the Infinite Existence, The dominion of both worlds is reduced to non-existence. See, O friend, what kind of existence this is, Wherein every single particle is in prostration. True existence is that which becomes neither more nor less, In which everything else is bound to become nothingness. How exalted is that Existence, wherein these existences Will, by their very nature, become non-existent. When a man becomes non-existent in that station, All of his loss there turns into gain. If the creation of the world attempts to reach out, None will touch his hem for a single moment. Since neither this person remains nor his hem, Who could hover around him for a moment?'
