یکی از خواجهٔ جندی بپرسید
که تو به یا سگی وز کس نترسید

مریدانش دویدند آشکاره
که تا آنجا کنندش پاره پاره

بیک ره منع کرد آن جمله را پیر
بدو گفتا نیم آگه ز تقدیر

نشد معلومم ای جان پدر حال
جوابت چون توان آورد در قال

گر از اوباش راه ایمان برم من
توانم گفت کز سگ بهترم من

وگر ایمان نخواهم برد از اوباش
چو موئی بود می از سگ من ای کاش

چو پرده بر نیفتادست از پیش
منه بر سگ بموئی منت از خویش

که گر سگ را میان خاک راهست
ولیکن با تو از یک جایگاهست

English translation

Someone asked the Khwaja of Jund, 'Are you better or a dog?' and feared no one. His disciples ran openly, so that they might tear him to pieces right there. All at once, the master stopped them all, and said to him, 'I am unaware of destiny. It has not become clear to me, O dear soul, how can a reply be put into words? If I carry my faith safely away from the ruffians of the path, I can say that I am better than a dog. But if I do not carry my faith safely away from the ruffians, I wish I were but a hair of a dog. Since the veil has not yet been lifted from before us, do not claim even a hair's worth of superiority over the dog. For though the dog's path lies in the dust, it is nonetheless from the same origin as you.'
