(6) The Tale of the Commander of the Faithful Umar, May Allah Be Pleased with Him

Original content

English translation

Umar took up a portion of the Torah; When the Prophet saw him thus, he spoke to him: 'It is not possible to play with the Torah, Unless you make yourself a pure Jew. One must be a pure Jew, though unsuccessful, For that Jew is better than a raw and unrefined person. You are neither this nor that, and this is forbidden to you, For being incomplete in religion is the ultimate incompleteness. You are neither complete in disbelief nor complete in faith; Tell me at last, in what station do you stand?'
