On the Virtue of al-Siddiq, May Allah Be Pleased with Him

Original content

English translation

The leader of the men of faith, the greatest truthful one (Siddiq-i Akbar), The truthful leader and the chief of commanders. He was the greatest gifted mercy, Whose good deeds took precedence in the faith. In the night of seclusion, he was the close companion and friend of the cave, The first forty thousand were sacrificed on his path. Since Abu Bakr began in this manner with religion, To him returns the reward of the entire world. Therefore, his faith in the origin of creation, Outweighs all other faiths due to his precedence. He had a toothache for ten years, Yet he did not inform the Prophet of his state. When the Truth (God) informed the Prophet of this in truth, The Prophet said to him: 'O world of Siddiq's forbearance, Why did you not recount this story to me?' He replied: 'It is not fitting to complain of the Truth.' For one who preserved the religion of the Truth in this way, Who else but the Truth had access to his life and soul? He always kept a stone in his mouth, So that his tongue would not scatter pearls. I have heard of pearls within stones, But I have never seen a stone within a pearl. His soul was so absorbed in the Truth That seldom did any speech cross his tongue. Since his soul was occupied with the Quranic verses, Only eighteen traditions (hadiths) were narrated from him. It would befit the world, even if it were eighteen thousand fold, That those eighteen traditions are his legacy. His tradition became like the origin of the world, And the proofs of its temporal creation became firm. See what intellect and insight he possessed, That he had knowledge of the pregnant woman and the child. When he prayed for the helpless blind man, The Truth (God) granted his request with sight. He never drew a breath in self-aggrandizement, And he did not speak except to say, 'Relieve me' (aqiluni). When the hour of his death approached, They brought him back to Mustafa. By Siddiq, that key to the world of secrets, The door opened, and the lock fell from the curtain. Out of yearning, the lock shattered like a chain, And the curtain leaped forward to welcome him. If a heart becomes faithful through his truth, Why should the heart of his enemy remain like iron? Since the lock was removed by his truth, Why was the lock of the enemy's heart not opened? When the companions arrived at that station, They saw him embraced by the dust. He who is companion to the one bitten by the snake, Can truly be called the companion of the cave (yar-i ghar). Since the Prophet called Abu Bakr and Umar, One the 'sight' and the other the 'hearing'. Since the Prophet called both hearing and sight, Whoever lacks these two remains blind and deaf.
