The First Discourse

English translation

If you have seen the world, it is a lost companion, A bewildered heart, a troubled affair. One who had knowledge related a story, That once a Caliph had six sons. All of them were high-minded, They had not set aside their pride and loftiness. In every science that existed in their time, They were all unique and peerless. Since each was a master of various arts in the world, And each was a complete human in both worlds. One day, the father sat them down together, Saying, 'Each of you is well-versed in the knowledge of the world. You are sons of the Caliph and you are kings, What does each of you desire from this world? Whether you have a hundred desires or only one, Tell me, in brief, each one of you. Once I know the inclination and belief of each, I shall arrange the affairs of each according to his wish.' First, one son spoke of his secret desire, Which is related by noble elders: 'The King of the Fairies has a virgin daughter, Whose beauty makes it impossible to mention the moon. In the beauty of intellect and grace of soul she is supreme, She is the fairest on earth and in heaven. If I fully achieve this desire, This will suffice as my goal until the Resurrection. Who, with such a possessor of beauty, Would seek perfection anywhere beyond her? One who has proximity to the sun, How could he hope for the proximity of a speck? This is my desire, and if I do not have this, My religion will be nothing but madness.'
