Augmentation of Healthcare, Food Services, and Social Support for Fall 2020 Re-opening of Schools
School-based health centers should be expanded upon school re-opening because they enhance student education, reduce healthcare disparities among vulnerable populations, and provide significant cost savings. Additionally, student and caregiver eligibility, distribution practices, and safety standards must be re-evaluated for federally-assisted school-based meal programs, which annually benefit nearly 30 million children. Anxiety about re-opening among school staff may increase rates of teacher turnover that particularly affect students at resource-constrained schools, so schools may need to augment social support programs as well.
