Benefit of Service Dogs to Veterans with PTSD: Watch Back/Cover
The second most commonly utilized service dog ability is Watch Back/Cover, which helps with the PTSD symptoms of hypervigilance and feeling jumpy and on edge. Many veterans with PTSD feel anxious and hypervigilant when they are around a lot of people in public. The service dog is trained to help relieve some of this distress by constantly being on guard around people. Interestingly, this is a behavior reminiscent of soldiers watching each other's back in battle.
