When the mood disturbance is asserted to be attributable to the physiological effect of a specific, usually chronic medical condition, the diagnosis of bipolar and related disorders is made 


Bipolar and Related Disorder Due to Another Medical Condition as a Differential Diagnosis to Cyclothymic Disorder

The difference between those disorders——substance/medication-induced bipolar and related disorder and substance/medication-induced depressive disorder——and cyclothymic disorder is about whether substance/medication is etiologically related to the mood disturbance. 


Substance/Medication-Induced Bipolar and Related Disorder and Substance/Medication-Induced Depressive Disorder as Differential Diagnoses to Cyclothymic Disorder

Both disorders may resemble cyclothymic disorder by virtue of the frequent marked shifts in mood, but bipolar I disorder and bipolar II disorder with rapid cycling require the full mood episodes, and cyclothymic disorder not.
