Branch of a Hyperbola

Each of the two separate, mirror-image curves that make up a hyperbola is called a branch. Because a hyperbola is formed by the set of all points whose distances from two foci differ by a constant, the resulting graph splits into two distinct, disconnected pieces rather than forming a single continuous loop. Each branch opens away from the center and approaches—but never touches—the hyperbola's asymptotes as the curve extends outward.
