In Section 16 of Silsilat al-Dhahab (within Jami's Haft Awrang), the poet describes the lowest state of human perception: complete captivity to outer form (surat) and total ignorance of inner spiritual meaning (ma'ni).

• The Intricate Veil of Form: Individuals in this state are completely blinded by the outer details of physical form, failing to perceive the underlying spiritual reality.
• Confusion of Shell and Kernel: Jami metaphorically compares these individuals to beasts that feed only on the husk or shell (qishr) because they cannot distinguish it from the inner kernel (lubab).
• Dependence on the Transient: Because their attachment is solely to the transient forms of the physical world, they fall into deep sorrow and distress whenever those forms are removed or fade.
