Certainty of Knowledge (علم الیقین) in Jami's Section 19

This section dramatizes the first of the three classical Sufi stages of certainty — علم الیقین (knowledge-based certainty), عین الیقین (certainty of direct sight), and حق الیقین (certainty of ultimate truth). Here the disciple (مرید) emerges from the night of conjecture and estimation (شب ظن و تخمین) into the light of sure knowledge through his first conversation with the enlightened spiritual guide (پیر).

Key imagery ties inner states to natural light and darkness:

• ظلمت شک / the darkness of doubt overtaking the scene, then yielding to نور یقین / the light of certainty.
• برق هدایت ز سحاب کرم / the lightning of guidance from the cloud of grace, kindling knowledge upon knowledge.
