Original content

English translation

Last night, when like the light of certainty within doubt, The day became hidden within the veil of night, The curtain of night concealed the face of the earth, The darkness of doubt hid the light of certainty. The lightning of guidance from the cloud of grace Raised its flame, banner upon banner. The luminous stars opened their eyes together, Winking at the dwellers of darkness: 'Tonight, since it is a time of earnest seeking, Is not a night for sleeping, but a night of wakefulness.' My eyes were opened by their winking, And the fortune of my wakefulness began. A light fell into my narrow heart, And the darkness of my negligence came to my mind. The sigh of regret flared up from my heart, The tears of sorrow sprinkled water on my clay. I raised my head from the collar of fidelity, I reached out to cling to the hem of prayer. For prayer, from the knot of my fist, Every finger of mine became unclasped. I raised the hand of supplication to the heavens, I shot the arrow of prayer at the target. I said, 'O Qiblah of the free-born, Guide of those who have lost their way, Your craftsmanship is an elixir for any copper, Your grace is the capital of every destitute. My base ambition has taken away the splendor of my faith, The darkness of doubt has taken away the light of my certainty. Send a guide of faith before my path, Send a candle of certainty for my night.' My lips were not yet sated with prayer, The time of supplication had not yet passed, When suddenly a lamp appeared from afar, And added a light of relief to my heart. It came closer, the banner of light was raised, It became the eraser of the rust of the dark night. As the banner of light rent open the collar of night, The countenance of Khidr shone from his collar. What can I say of Khidr, when a thousand like Khidr Drank a draft from the fountain of his heart! The water of Khidr possessed the fire of his passion, He had life from the breath of his Messiah. In short, when my eye fell upon him, A flame fell into this dried reed of my existence. The light of my certainty kindled from within, It burned away the thorns and weeds of illusion and conjecture. I quickly leaped up like a prayer rug from my place, Like his prayer rug, I fell at his feet. I rubbed my face like a horseshoe on his feet, I wore away his feet from kissing them so much. He extended the hand of generosity over my head: 'O you whose head is dust in the path of need, Turn your face to me, for I am your beloved, Give your pulse to me, for I am your physician. The path that has led me to this stage, They have sent me specifically for you. Reveal the cause of your illness, Explain the reasons for your captivity.' I said to him, 'O Khidr of messianic breath, You are Khidr and the Messiah today, and that is all. From your footsteps, the pasture of my joy sprouted, And from your breath, the taste of life reached me. My illness became absolute healing through you, Better than a hundred releases from captivity. My health is the fortune of seeing you, My potion is the sweetness of your speech. Your face became the proof of my faith, The banner of certainty was raised from my soul. Whatever reached my ailing soul from you, Renders proof and demonstration sterile. And that by which I became acquainted with the path through you, Is not the product of logic and analogy. From now on, no grief or burden remains on me, No dust remains on the face of my goal. But I fall down from this fear: Lest I should fall apart from you, The star of my fortune should become hidden, And the morning of my certainty should turn into a dark night.' He said, 'O Jami, do not be anxious, Since the mirror of your thought has become pure. Be always connected to me through the path of the heart, Keep your mirror facing me, So that from the brilliance that shone from me upon you, Your knowledge becomes sight, and attains vision. Your attainment will deliver you entirely from yourself, You will find all as One, and that is all, peace.'
