The fact the 90% of those with AIDS are in the economically productive age group (10-49 years) has serious implications for the future of Third World countries. In Zaire, for example, it has been projected that premature deaths from AIDS will reduce the gross national product by 8% in 1995.

Implications for Third World Countries

In 2015, 1.1 million people died from AIDS-related causes worldwide, compared to 2 million in 2005. There was a 45% decrease in new infections between 2000 and 2015.

Currently, the amount of HIV/AIDs prevalence in different parts of Africa is tied to rape and sex work. Around Africa, the main tactic for mitigating AIDs is not medication, but increased access to condoms. The increased access to condoms in the community is helping but not as much as needed. Key populations and their sexual partners account for over half of the new HIV/AIDs cases in Africa. Key populations include men who have sex with men, people who inject drugs, people in prisons and other closed settings, sex workers and their clients, and transgender people.
