Chapter Three of 'Autobiography in Five Short Chapters'
The third chapter of Portia Nelson's poem marks a significant shift towards self-awareness and accountability. The narrator walks down the same street and, despite seeing the hole, falls in again out of habit. However, this time there is full awareness ('my eyes are open') and an admission of responsibility ('It is my fault'). This stage represents the point where an individual recognizes their role in a recurring negative pattern, which allows for a much quicker recovery ('I get out immediately').
