Choosing a Just Societal Rule

Imagine you are tasked with choosing a fundamental rule for a new society, but you must do so from a unique position of uncertainty: you do not know what your own social status, income level, talents, or personal beliefs will be in this society. You could end up as the most advantaged or the most disadvantaged person.

From this impartial viewpoint, which of the following two principles for distributing resources would you argue is more just? Justify your choice.

  • Principle A: Resources should be distributed to maximize the total wealth of the society, even if this leads to significant disparities between the richest and poorest members.
  • Principle B: Resources should be distributed to ensure that the well-being of the least well-off person is as high as possible, even if this reduces the total overall wealth of the society.
