Short Answer

Choosing the Optimal Production Method

A company can produce 100 widgets using one of three methods, each requiring a different combination of labor and materials:

  • Method Alpha: 2 workers, 6 tons of material
  • Method Beta: 3 workers, 4 tons of material
  • Method Gamma: 2 workers, 8 tons of material

First, identify which method will never be the least-cost option and explain why. Second, describe the specific cost conditions (i.e., the relationship between the wage rate for a worker and the price per ton of material) under which Method Alpha would be cheaper than Method Beta.
