Evaluating Production Technology Choices

A manufacturing company is capable of producing a standard unit of output using one of three different production methods. The inputs required for each method are as follows:

  • Method Alpha: Requires 2 workers and 10 units of energy.
  • Method Beta: Requires 5 workers and 4 units of energy.
  • Method Gamma: Requires 2 workers and 8 units of energy.

First, identify if any of these methods would never be the least-cost option, regardless of input prices, and explain your reasoning. Second, for the remaining viable methods, determine and justify the specific conditions under which the company should choose the more labor-intensive method.
