Clinical, Immunological and Virological Characterization of COVID-19 Patients that Test Re-Positive for SARS-CoV-2 by RT-PCR
Researchers in China retested 619 discharged COVID-19 patients for SARS-CoV-2 using RT-PCR. Of these 619 individuals, 87 retested as positive for SARS-CoV-2, meaning that around 14% of discharged COVID-19 patients are tested as re-positive with RT-PCR. It was determined that when compared to those who did not test as re-positive, individuals who did test as positive again were younger and had more mild clinical symptoms upon their first diagnosis. The neutralization antibodies titre distribution was similar between the re-positive patients and the other patients. However, from the re-positive cases, full-length viral genomes were unable to be sequenced and no infectious strains were able to be acquired via culture, indicating that re-positive cases are not a result of active reinfection.
