Clinically Significant Endospore-Forming Bacteria

While not all bacteria possess the ability to form endospores, several clinically significant, gram-positive pathogens belong to the endospore-forming genera Bacillus and Clostridium. These include Bacillus anthracis (anthrax), Clostridium tetani (tetanus), Clostridium perfringens (gas gangrene), and Clostridium botulinum (botulism), as well as the related pathogen Clostridioides difficile (pseudomembranous colitis). These pathogens are particularly challenging to combat medically because their endospores are highly resilient and extremely difficult to eradicate.
