Coase Theorem (Definition)

The Coase theorem states that if property rights are well-defined and transaction costs are zero, private bargaining between parties will lead to a socially efficient allocation of resources, regardless of how the property rights were initially assigned. While the efficient outcome is reached in either case, the initial assignment of rights does affect the distribution of wealth between the parties.
