Combined Negative Emotional States as a Strong Predictor of Heart Disease
While individual negative emotions like depression are known risk factors for heart disease, the cumulative effect of chronically experiencing several negative emotional states is a more powerful predictor. Research indicates that a composite variable combining attributes such as depression, anxiety, hostility, and anger predicts the onset of heart disease more effectively than any of these factors considered in isolation.
