Essay

Comparing Economic Coordination Models

Consider two proposed methods for ensuring a city has an adequate supply of bread. Method A involves a government agency that manages all wheat farming, flour milling, baking, and distribution. Method B allows independent farmers, millers, bakers, and distributors to operate freely, buying and selling from one another as they see fit.

Critique the argument that Method B, without any central direction, could be a more effective and resilient system for providing bread to the city than Method A. In your critique, explain the mechanism by which the uncoordinated actions of many individuals in Method B might lead to an orderly and sufficient supply of bread, and assess the potential advantages and disadvantages of this approach compared to the centrally planned one.
