Consumer Price Index (CPI)

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the general level of prices consumers pay for goods and services, including consumption taxes. The specific basket of items is chosen to reflect the spending of a typical household. For this reason, the percentage change in the CPI, known as CPI inflation, is often used as a measure of changes in the 'cost of living'.
