Short Answer

Contrasting Single vs. Repeated Interactions

Two firms are located next to each other and share a common courtyard. Each firm can either spend money to help maintain the courtyard (cooperate) or not spend the money (defect). If they both cooperate, the courtyard is pleasant and attracts more customers for both. If one defects while the other cooperates, the defector gets the benefit of a clean courtyard without the cost. If both defect, the courtyard becomes messy and deters customers. Briefly explain why the predicted outcome of this interaction is different if the firms know they will be neighbors for only one month versus for the foreseeable future.
