The Logic of Sustained Cooperation

In a one-time interaction, two neighboring farmers, each acting in their own self-interest, would likely choose a cheap, polluting pest control method, even though the mutual use of a more expensive, environmentally-friendly method would yield a better outcome for them both combined. Yet, in many real-world scenarios where these farmers interact season after season, they consistently choose the more expensive, cooperative method. Analyze the strategic thinking that explains why the ongoing, repeated nature of their relationship can lead to this sustained cooperation, in contrast to the outcome of a single interaction.
