Cost of University: Economic vs. Accounting Perspective

The 2012 tripling of university tuition fees in the UK from £3,000 to £9,000 raises the question of whether the total cost of attendance also tripled. The answer differs based on the perspective. An accounting view, which focuses solely on direct 'out-of-pocket' costs like tuition, would conclude that the cost did triple. In contrast, an economic analysis incorporates the opportunity cost—such as wages lost while studying—which did not change. Therefore, from an economic standpoint, the total cost of university increased but by a much smaller proportion than three-fold.
