COVID-19 on college students' mental health: Discussion
Findings suggest a considerable negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on a variety of academic, health, and lifestyle outcomes for undergraduate college students, including increased stress and anxiety. The most prominent stressor among undergraduate students are worries about one’s own health and the health of their loved ones, followed by difficulty concentrating. Undergraduates experience several barriers to seeking help for their mental health, including the lack of trust in counseling services and low levels of comfort sharing their struggles, which may be indicative of students perceiving social stigma as a barrier to seeking help.
Limitations to this study:
- The sample size was very small.
- The sample used is from one university, and may not generalize to all college students in the US.
- Although a majority of participants stated that they did not utilize the university’s mental health services, most did not provide a reason.
