Shows the differences in the complete genomes of 4 different strains of the coronavirus

A sample of the Covid 19 virus underwent sequence analysis that revealed that Covid 19 has approximately 80% shared identity with SARS-CoV and 50% with MERS-CoV. It's suggested that Covid 19 developed after several mutations from different parent strains of the coronavirus.

COVID-19 Virology in Comparison to SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV

The full-genome sequence of two SARS-CoV-2 strains were isolated from two patients diagnosed in Italy and were compared. Genome sequences were from an Italian patient and the other from a Chinese tourist visiting Rome. These were completely sequenced and analysed, after virus cultivation. Viral genome sequence of the Chinese tourist matched that of another Chinese tourist hospitalized in Rome. But the viral genome sequence from the Italian patient differed from the sequence isolated from the Chinese tourist. The strain of the Italian patient was similar with other viral strains identified in Germany and Mexico, while the strain from the Chinese tourist was similar with the Wuhan virus strain, clustered with different European strains and a strain from Australia. These results indicate how there mutations being found in the virus and similarities and differences between SARS-CoV-2 strains. 



Genomic study of two SARS-CoV-2 strains


The study analyzed SARS-CoV-2 genomes from different geographical regions, India, Italy, USA, Nepal, and Wuhan, to determine genomic features unique to SARS-CoV-2 that differ from SARS-CoV and other coronavirus genomes. This information can allow scientists to understand more about the unique infection, facilitation of transmission, virulence, and immunogenic features of the virus.
