Critical Period for Visual Development
A critical period in visual development is a specific timeframe after birth during which the visual system requires sensory input to develop normally. Research by Hubel and Wiesel demonstrated that if an animal is deprived of visual stimuli during this period, the neural connections in the visual cortex can fail to mature properly or can be lost, resulting in permanent visual impairment.
