Short Answer

Critique of a Responder's Rationale

In a one-time, anonymous interaction, two individuals must divide $100. One person (the Proposer) offers a split, and the other (the Responder) can accept or reject it. If the offer is rejected, both individuals receive $0. The Proposer offers the Responder $1. The Responder rejects the offer, explaining, 'It's better to get $0 than to accept an unfair offer. This teaches the Proposer a lesson for the future.' Based on a model where an individual's only goal is to maximize their own immediate financial payoff, critique the Responder's explanation for their decision.
