Case Study

Critiquing an Experimental Design for Studying Farmer Behavior

An economist wants to study how small-scale farmers in a specific rural region decide whether to adopt a new, more expensive, but higher-yielding seed variety. Due to budget and time constraints, the researcher conducts the experiment with undergraduate business students at a national university. The students are given detailed information about the costs and potential benefits of the new seeds and are asked to make a decision for a hypothetical farm. The study finds that 90% of the students choose to adopt the new seeds. The researcher concludes that the new seed variety will be highly successful and widely adopted by the target farmer population.
