Evaluating Participant Selection in Economic Research

A research team is designing an experiment to understand how small-scale farmers in a specific region make decisions about adopting a new, drought-resistant crop. One researcher argues for recruiting local farmers from that region as participants. Another researcher suggests it would be faster and cheaper to use undergraduate students from a nearby university, presenting them with a hypothetical farming scenario.

Evaluate the first researcher's approach (using local farmers). In your evaluation, analyze the potential benefits and drawbacks of this method in terms of the reliability and applicability of the experiment's findings for informing local agricultural policy.
