Critiquing the Colonial Dependency Thesis

An economic theory argues that the British Industrial Revolution was fundamentally dependent on its colonies for both essential raw materials (like cotton) and as markets for finished goods (like textiles). A critic of this theory claims, 'This argument overstates the case. While colonies were certainly profitable, Britain's domestic ingenuity, abundant coal, and strong legal institutions were the true engines of industrialization. The revolution would have happened anyway, perhaps just a bit more slowly.' Evaluate the critic's position. In your evaluation, you must assess the strengths and weaknesses of the critic's counter-argument by considering the economic logic behind the original dependency theory.
