Data Analysis - Gender and Belonging in Undergraduate Computer Science
Thematic coding of interview transcripts:
- Thematic coding was used for the interviews with the students and the instructor
- It consisted of two rounds of coding. The first round made up the codes that fit. The second round used the constant comparative method, which is regrouping the codes and making sure they are making sense. While using that method the field theory would also be used to make sure that each position and social environment would be taken into account.
- The theory of belonging was also taken into account and coded as "belonging" or "isolation". Belonging was marked when student talked about social acceptance, whereas isolation was marked when student talked about rejection or feeling lonely.
Descriptive analysis of classroom observation data:
- this basically shows us which instructional practice or technique was used across all the 2 minute intervals.
