Males typically have more programming experience.
In his courses, Dr. Tisdale noted that males are more likely to speak up to show their knowledge in programming causing self-doubt in women.
Female students' experiences are lonely and described as feeling out of place, whereas male students said they feel comfortable in the course, because of the social environment.
Female students also noted that it is hard to make male friends because it caused an awkward tension about confusion in being interested in each other or not.
The department and institutional field dynamics influence course social fields and therefore also students feelings of belonging in the field.
