Developed by David Wechsler, the Wechsler intelligence scales became some of the most extensively used tests in psychology's history. The original version, the Wechsler-Bellevue Intelligence Scale, was created by combining subtests from earlier assessments to evaluate both verbal and nonverbal abilities. Although later renamed the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) and revised multiple times, the core aims of the test have remained largely the same since its inception.

What Intelligence Tests can Predict

Intelligence tests have limitations and can't predict every aspect of a person's future. Other abilities like musical, physical, and interpersonal skills, acknowledged by Howard Gardner, go beyond what these tests assess. Success in life is influenced by factors beyond intelligence, including effort, support from family and friends, and luck. While standardized tests like SATs have value, we sometimes expect too much from them. We overestimate their predictive power and emphasize the qualities they measure while overlooking other important factors.

James Flynn was a researcher known for being among the first to document a significant trend in intelligence testing. He observed that IQ scores have been steadily increasing from one generation to the next, a phenomenon now named the 'Flynn effect' in his honor. Flynn also contributed to the interpretation of this trend, arguing that the rise in scores might not reflect an actual increase in general intelligence.

The interpretation of IQ scores is based on a normal distribution with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15 points. The standard deviation measures the dispersion of scores from the average. Consequently, scores falling between 85 and 115, which is within one standard deviation of the mean, are considered average and encompass about 68% of the population. An IQ score of 130 or higher is regarded as being in the superior range.

Interpreting IQ Scores Using Standard Deviation

IQ testing has significant practical value in several settings. In educational and clinical environments, it helps identify children with learning or behavioral difficulties who may need extra support by determining if their challenges are related to an IQ score that deviates significantly from the average. In the legal system, IQ tests are used in court to assess whether a defendant has extenuating circumstances. Furthermore, individuals use IQ test results to apply for disability benefits from the Social Security Administration.

In the early 1900s, the French government commissioned researcher Alfred Binet to create an assessment to identify children who might face academic difficulties. His resulting intelligence test, which focused heavily on verbally-based tasks, marked the beginning of reliable and systematic intelligence testing.

Research indicates a positive relationship between genetic relatedness and intelligence quotient (IQ) scores, demonstrating that as individuals share a greater proportion of genes, the correlation between their IQ scores increases. For individuals who share no genes, such as adoptive parent-child pairs, adoptive siblings, or unrelated children raised together, the IQ correlation ranges from roughly 21 percent to 32 percent. This correlation rises to approximately 33 percent for half-siblings, who share 25 percent of their genes. For those sharing 50 percent of their genes, including parent-child pairs and fraternal twins raised together, the correlation increases to about 44 percent and 62 percent, respectively. The strongest relationship is observed in identical twins, who share 100 percent of their genes, exhibiting an IQ correlation of nearly 80 percent, even when raised apart.
