Deaf Community’s Complexity with Identification

The Deaf community has long held specific cultural identity marked by American Sign Language (ASL) use and noted by capital ‘D’. Some Deaf people consider themselves a discrete cultural and linguistic minority and don’t identify as disabled, while others join the broader disability community in solidarity to challenge societal norms. The “Deaf versus disabled” differentiation is problematic, however, because some people are both Deaf and disabled in other ways, making “Deaf not disabled” is inherently ableist.
