Ceteris Paribus (Other Things Equal)

Ceteris paribus, a Latin phrase literally meaning 'other things equal', is a foundational assumption in economic analysis. It allows economists to simplify complex situations by intentionally setting aside factors thought to be of less importance to the specific question of interest. By holding these other variables constant, the model can isolate and clearly analyze the effect of a single variable, such as the impact of a wage change, without the interference of other potential influences.
