Demand Characteristics in the Stanford Prison Experiment

A major criticism of the experiment's conclusions relates to demand characteristics. It is argued that Philip Zimbardo provided the 'guards' with specific instructions on expected behaviors. This guidance likely created an expectation that influenced the guards to act in the sadistic manner they believed the researchers wanted to see, rather than behaving spontaneously as a result of the situation.
