Design of Cárdenas's First Field Experiment (1998)

In July 1998, economist Juan Camilo Cárdenas conducted a pioneering field experiment in the Colombian village of Jurubirá. The participants were local villagers whose livelihoods depended on a shared mangrove forest. The experiment was designed as a game that simulated the extraction of this common-pool resource, allowing Cárdenas to study their cooperative behavior in a controlled setting with real monetary incentives.
